When Emma was 14 years old, she fell off her bicycle and fractured her knee. Her leg was put in plaster for 6 weeks. During this time, the pain in her leg became steadily worse and eventually her foot turned blue and then black. When the plaster was taken off, it was already too late to save her leg. A devastating infection had set in and her leg had to be amputated. Emma adjusted very quickly to her new life and today, even with only one leg, she is a happy and active girl. After her amputation, she suffered a great deal of pain in her leg stump and was plagued by phantom pains, but these have now completely disappeared. Normally Emma wears a prosthesis when she goes to school or to a disco. At home or when she goes into town, she feels that she has a lot more freedom without her prosthetic leg. People are often curious and want to know why doctors had to amputate her leg. Emma hates the pitying looks to her leg stump she sometimes notices, but is consoled by the realisation that many people admire her courage, find her still attractive with one leg and want to get to know her. Emma’s favourite colour is green and she loves to go to discos.
